I just knew it !

I had a conference with Ben's teacher yesterday and she was full of praises for him. He's such a good boy, loves to read, shares great, understand concepts. Apparently he is doing WAY above average for other kindergarteners. On the first grade level sight word list, there are 220 words. Ben can read 207 of them on his own! Sunday he sat here at home and read Mulan all by himself, having never have seen the movie and having no frame of context about it.
So because Ben is so advanced, he is going in to be tested to see if he is gifted. WOW! I knew he was smart, but it never occured to me that he would be gifted...but of course he is! If he passes the test, there is another test, and he will be placed into a program for the gifted. If he doesn't pass, he can take it again later, and it isn't a big deal if he doesn't. He will still be smart. I like to think I helped out with his intelligence by working with him at home, answering his questions, explaining things to him, reading to him a lot, and having him figure things out for himself from time to time. I went and told his preschool teacher from last year about all this, since she probably had some to do with it too, and she was so happy, she got goose bumps from the excitement. Mrs. Hill ( K teacher) asked me what do I do at home that helps Ben so much...I really don't know, but I will think about it to see if we DO do something that is extraordinary, other than always having the captions on the TV when we watch it.
I have read here and there that difficult children are highly intelligent, and he is definitely a difficult child at times.
WOW, huh?

On another note, the weather is so refreshing! We started a fire in the fireplace this morning. First fire of the season. I hope this weather stays, in other words, I don't want it to turn hot again before Thanksgiving. It is so invigorating! ahhhhh!

Aaron is so smart too. He can recognize letters and numbers and even pick out sounds of certain letters in words. Example..."off has an "f" in it... He writes pretty good and is very creative. Don't I have the best kids ever?

Kids are always better when the parents teach them at home and don't expect the teachers to do it all. Your kids are extra blessed because you are able to stay at home with them. We have smart people in our family so that also helps. You must be careful though not to put Ben too far ahead. People do that and then their kids suffer because of "social skills". They must have a total balance there. Its like when Michael and Kaci got on up in their grades, alot of their friends were taking college courses in high school trying and graduating before everyone else. Even though they made good grades they did not want to do that. They wanted to remain on an even keel.

Its good that the teachers recognize Bens achievements as they will always have to keep him interested so that he doesn't get "bored" with school, just don't rush him up in grades. If they struggle in certain areas that is ok too. I was not and am not smart in alot of areas but I am pretty smart in areas, so all in all in balances out. But yes, you do have pretty great kids, ya'll keep up the good work.
